First edition, in original parts, with first issue points “visiter” for “sister” on page 123 and “latter” instead of “letter” on page 160. Part 15 features the long title of the plate, “Nicholas makes his first visit to the lodgings of Mr. Bray.” Eckel, 64-66; Hatton & Cleaver, 131- 160; Podeschi/Gimbel A40.
20 parts in 19, octavo. Half-title. Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by Maclise and 39 engraved plates by Hablot K. Browne with all of the advertisements as called for by Hatton & Cleaver except for “Joseph Amesbury’s Patent Supports” in part 3, “On the first of November” in part 7, “This day is published” in part 8, and “Tya’s Illustrated Classics” in part 17 (browning to plates, scattered foxing). Original blue-green pictorial printed wrappers (chipping to ends of most spines). Half-morocco box with red chemise. Provenance: J.H. Hoppe (bookseller’s label).
