First edition in original parts of Dickens’ last complete novel, with parts 1-10 unopened. First issue of part 1 without the printer’s imprint on front wrapper and with slip addressed to the reader, part 2 lists printers, “Leipzig: Ludwig Denicke” below “London: Chapman and Hall, Piccadilly.” Eckel 95; Hatton & Cleaver 345-370; Podeschi/Gimbel A149.

20 parts in 19, octavo. Half-titles, ‘To the Reader’ slip tipped to first leaf, frontispiece and 39 wood engravings with tissue guards after Marcus Stone, with all of the “Our Mutual Friend Advertisers,” ads, and slips called for by Hatton & Cleaver except for ‘Liverpool & London & Globe’ and ‘Mappin, Webb & Co.’ in part 15, and a different ordering of ‘The Economic Life Assurance Policy,’ ‘The Anthelmintic Bon Bon,’ and ‘Dr. De Jongh’s’ in part 19/20 (minor foxing in a few of the later parts, some tissue guards lacking). Original blue-green pictorial printed wrappers (chips and tears in parts 10-19/20, occasional minor staining). Black clamshell box.
