BURGUNDY VINTAGE REPORTS 1997-2009
1997**
A small yield and excellent quality. The summer of 1997 is marked by a heatwave during the month of August with temperatures exceeding 30°C for two weeks. The end of August brought with it rain and storms. The return of dry and sunny weather in September allowed the grapes to reach perfect maturity.
Harvest took place between the 20th and 25th of September.
1998****
This vintage produced excellent red wines in the Côte de Nuits. The weather was capricious, with a cold and rainy summer that didn’t start in earnest until the month of August then proceeded to alternate between heat and big rainstorms. The structure and freshness of the red wines in this vintage has allowed them to age very well. The white wines are fragrant and opulently styled.
Harvest began on the 25th of September in the sunshine and lasted until the 1st of October
1999*****
This vintage produced magnificent wines with intense aroma concentration of small red fruits, flowers, spices and black fruits and is now starting to show the first signs of tertiary bottle ageing aromas. Blessed with superb balance and impressive length, these wines rely on their exceptionally fine grained structure to produce wines destined for the long haul.
Harvest took place between the 25th and 30th of September.
2000***
Flowering and fruit set went exceptionally well in this vintage with very little loss due to coulure. The vegetative cycle had a head start in spring, but the cool months of July and August meant that this head start was lost. The return of warm conditions in September allowed the grapes to obtain a lovely natural degree of alcohol and good phenolic ripeness.
Harvest took place between the 21st and 27th of September.
2001****
This vintage produced very good red wines in the Côte de Nuits. After a cool and rainy July, the summer conditions only really began in August, alternating between heatwaves and huge rainstorms. The month of September was cooler and dry, allowing the grapes to achieve perfect maturity whilst preserving a good level of acidity. The structure and freshness of the red wines in 2001 has allowed them to age beautifully.
Harvest took place between the 26th of September and the 4th of October.
2002*****
The excellent maturity of the Pinot Noir grapes in this vintage led to the creation of beautifully coloured, charming and structured wines destined for long lives. The mouthfeel of these wines is rounded, with great depth and significant but delicate tannins and great length. The 2002 vintage has produced wines of remarkable quality.
Harvest took place between the 25th of September and the 1st of October.
2003****
The wines from the 2003 vintage, concentrated from the outset because of an exceptionally hot and sunny summer, have shaped themselves over time and now express the characteristic qualities of Burgundy wines - refinement and distinction. Unique and elegant, they are also extremely rare owing to the low yields. A precious vintage - one of the great years for the Burgundian vineyards.
The charming and rich red wines surprise us with their complex scents of red and black fruits, floral notes and spicy hints. They are intense and deep in colour with superb garnet glimmers. The round, silky tannins give solid and well-balanced structure which has allowed them to age very well. The Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes shows its aromatic potential and has a harmonious structure. The Grand Cru Chapelle-Chambertin, built to last, full of power and balance shows surprising freshness. While delicious today, it will go on to delight many generations of fine wine lovers. Experience teaches us that in effect, heatwave vintages such as 1934, 1947, 1959, 1962 or 1990 have evolved admirably over time.
For the whites, the Aligoté demonstrates the full potential, in this hot year, of the Clos des Monts Luisants terroir. These vines of almost 100 years old, located at the top of the slope and bordered by the forest, produced concentrated grapes while preserving excellent acidity. The wine obtained has aged remarkably well. Beautifully golden in colour, it has expressive aromas of candied orange, exotic fruits, soft spices and mineral flinty hints. Flattering and balanced, it expresses all the richness and complexity of this extraordinary vintage.
An early harvest which started on the 6th September and ended on the 10th September.
2004**
A great surprise. The conditions having been frequently challenging (rain, hail, mildew), the know-how of the estate’s team was essential in this vintage. 2004 is without a doubt a year for the winemaker with the work done in the vineyard being truly rewarded. The wines, with their intense ruby red colour and their fruity and spicy nose, reveal a mouthfeel of undeniable quality and pleasant structure thanks to their supple and elegant tannins.
Harvest took place between the 27th of September and the 8th of October.
2005*****
Exceptional. The very high quality of the wines produced is due in major part to the production of ripe and healthy grapes. As such, due to almost perfect weather conditions, 2005 has become a benchmark vintage. Nothing is lacking in these wines, the nose has notes of ripe fruit and spices, the mouthfeel has an astonishing texture and the length is impressive. Savoury and a touch unusual, these are wines of exceptional precision. Le red wines are the perfect expression of their grape variety: Pinot Noir in all its splendour.
Harvest began on the 24th of September and finished on the 28th.
The 2009 Vintage : Magnificent !
In 2009, the vines were able to reap the benefits of ideal conditions throughout their entire cycle and most especially during the ripening phase which basked in light. Sunshine and heat were on full display for the whole of August and September, giving extraordinary raw material which became evident during the vinifications.
This very favourable climate allowed for the production of magnificent wines of exceptional pedigree wines. Their expressive, complex scents are now showing the first hints of evolution and sing with aromas of small red fruits, dried flowers, spices and dark-fruit jams. They are endowed with fine balance and imposing substance, backed up by body and impressive length on the palate, making this a very fine vintage for ageing. It is accessible today, but will nevertheless reach its peak in around 15 years time.
Harvest took place between the 21st and 27th of September.
CLOS SAINT DENIS
One of the 5 grands crus of the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, Clos Saint Denis is a 6.62 ha vineyard which is divided into around forty plots. The Ponsot wines come from the metayage of a 0.38ha plot mostly planted back in 1905.
The appellation is located on the middle part of the hillside, between Clos de la Roche and Clos des Lambrays on clay soil punctuated by a few limestone screes, a soil that suits Pinot Noir. This Clos is said to be the Mozart of the Côte de Nuits. Its wines have a lot of charm, a certain lightness, tenderness, fruitiness, with beautiful floral and vanilla notes, with an aging potential that can go on for many decades.
