Cette grenouille ou kitende, est en position accroupie, prête à bondir. Il s’agit d’un exemple exceptionnel dans le corpus de ces figurines zoomorphes, généralement en ivoire, os d’éléphant, bois et argile sculpté.
En décomposant le mot kitende, la signification donnée à cet amphibien s’en trouve éclairée : « dans la pensée Léga, l’image de la grenouille représente un personnage humain, en particulier le nouvel initié. La racine tende du mot kitende est proche du nom utilisé pour le nouvel initié « mu-tende ». Le mot kiten de désigne ainsi métonymiquement le nouvel initié. Le saut et le gonflement sans défense de la grenouille sont emblématiques de l’initié inexpérimenté » (extrait d’une note du Docteur Biebuyck).

The term kitende itself, when deconstructed, sheds light on the meaning ascribed to this amphibian: “in Lega thought, the image of the frog stands for a human character especially the new initiate. The root of kitende is -tende. This is close to the name used for the new initiate “mu-tende.” The term kitende thus becomes a metonymical designation for the new initiate.
