Ce masque Léga au visage en forme de cœur, présente une petite bouche et un nez long et fin entre deux yeux bulbeux en forme de grains de café avec des sourcils hauts et arqués. Une fine patine vieillie brun miel recouvre la surface. Le front étroit n’a pas été enduit de kaolin et laisse apparaître le bois brun clair généralement utilisé pour ces masques.
Les masques Lukwakongo représentent des valeurs importantes au sein de la société Léga. « Ils symbolisent «celui qui donne la vie», le géniteur, une personne autoritaire ou «l’incarnation de l’homme». Plus important encore, ils sont des rappels conceptuels des vertus et des valeurs de la structure bwami. Ces masques transmis d’une génération à l’autre, reflètent la créativité, la continuité et la survie, d’une génération à l’autre » (Daniel Biebuyck, note pour « le masque Léga »). Ces masques très précieux aux yeux des initiés qui les possèdent sont conservés après leur mort, et exposés sur leurs tombes, avant d’être transmis à un nouveau détenteur.
This Lega mask features a heart shaped face, a small mouth, and a long slender nose which bisects a pair of bulbous coffee bean eyes with high arched eyebrows. A fine patina covers the surface. The shallow forehead above the contour of the face has also been coated with kaolin pigment. Lukwakongo masks represent important ideals within Lega society. “They represent the "giver of life," the progenitor, a person of great authority or the "semblance of man." Most importantly they are conceptual reminders of the virtues and values of bwami structure. As a mask is passed from one generation to the next it embodies creativity, continuity and survival, one generation to the next” (Professor Daniel Biebuyck, note for “Lega mask”). Such masks are prized by the initiates who own them and even upon death are displayed at their tombs, before being passed on to a new owner.
