Monstration de virtuosité, cette coupe anthropomorphe était réservée aux notables et à la classe dirigeante pour la consommation de vin de palme lors de festivités ou de rassemblements sociaux.
L’artiste, par le traitement de la panse anthropomorphe et de la base podale, a transcendé cet objet utilitaire en œuvre d’art. Le modelé des traits caractéristiques de la sculpture Pendé est ici rendu avec une très grande délicatesse : une coiffe quadrillée, le front lisse et bombé, le visage ovoïde à la bouche pincée, les orbites rhombiques encadrant des yeux mi-clos, et les chéloïdes temporales. La patine brune atteste son usage répété.
Cette coupe s’impose comme un très bel exemple de la tradition sculpturale Pendé. Elle est à rapprocher de l’exemplaire conservé au High Museum of Art d’Atlanta (inv. n° 2004.230).

Through the treatment of the anthropomorphic paunch standing on one foot, the artist has transcended this utilitarian object into a work of art. Characteristic of Pende sculpture, its features are modelled with great delicacy: a gridded headdress, a smooth and rounded forehead, an ovoïd face with a pinched mouth, rhombic orbits framing half-closed eyes, and temporal keloids. The brown patina attests to its repeated use.
This bowl stands out as a very fine example of the Pende sculptural tradition. It is similar to the example in the High Museum of Art in Atlanta (inv. no. 2004.230).
