Une multitude de matériaux, de formes et de textures juxtaposés et complémentaires composent cette figure de reliquaire Kota. Uniques dans le domaine vaste et varié de l'art africain, les figures de reliquaire Kota sont composées d'une structure de bois sur laquelle sont savamment appliquées plaques et bandes de cuivre, de laiton et de fer - métaux très appréciés des Kota.
La tête de la figurine est coiffée d'une feuille de laiton fixée par des agrafes indigènes en cuivre jusqu'à l'arrière de la tête. Deux paires de sourcils en demi-lune, l’une en laiton et l'autre en cuivre, encadrent les yeux en os. Sous les yeux, en contraste à ces courbes, des bandes métalliques horizontales s'étirent du nez jusqu'aux bords du visage. Des perforations figurent la bouche ronde, et d’autres descendent jusqu'à la base du menton. Un long cou entouré de bandes de laiton relie la tête au corps triangulaire de la figure.

This Kota reliquary figure is composed of a multitude of juxtaposed and complementary materials, shapes, and textures. Unique within the extensive and varied field of African art, Kota reliquary figures are composed of an underlying wood structure covered with skillfully applied plates and strips of copper, brass, and iron - metals which are greatly valued amongst the Kota.
The figure’s head is capped by a sheet of brass, extending to the back and affixed with indigenous copper staples. Two pairs of semi-lunar eyebrows, the top one brass and the bottom one copper, frame the eyes made of bone. Contrasting these curvilinear elements, metal strips beneath the eyes span outwards from the central nose to the edges of the face. A circle of perforated holes features the mouth-like feature, with the perforations extending to the bottom of the chin. A long neck wrapped in brass strips connects the head to the triangle-shaped body of the figure.
This beautiful piece belonged previously to Stanley J. Seeger, a great enthusiast of design, decorative arts, pre-Columbian and African arts. A prolific and passionate collector who maintained a low profile within the art world throughout his life, Seeger acquired important works by artists including Francis Bacon, Max Beckmann, and Picasso.
