Lot Essay

The mottoes Stand fast and Craig Elachie as well as the burning hill crest all refer "to the great hummock of rock overlooking the Spey at Aviemore, to which the clan rushed when beacon fires were lit". See D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 242, no. E5. A single charger from this service, in the collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff, was sold by Christie's, New York, 23 January 2008, lot 319.
