Lot Essay

The coat of arms at the center belong to the Goos family, out of whom Jacques-Xavier (1685-1739), Baron Goos, Lord of Ghyseghem and Secretary of Antwerp, commissioned the present service. The arms at dexter correspond to his first wife, Reine-Isabelle Vecquemans (1684-1719), whom he married in 1708, and the arms at sinister belong to his second wife, Cornélie-Flore Goubau (1699-1733), whom he married in 1720. For an illustration and discussion of this elaborately decorated service, see H. Maertens de Noordhout, Porcelaines chinoises "Compagnie des Indes" décorées d'armoiries belges, Andenne, 1997, pp. 98-99. A large saucer dish from the service in the collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff was sold by Christie's, New York, 23 January 2008, lot 365.
