Lot Essay

The composition of this painting derives from a work by Quentin Metsys, datable to around 1500, now in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schoone Kunsten, Antwerp. It is unclear whether this panel was painted as an individual work since, as was often the case in early Netherlandish depictions of Christ as the Savior of the World - and indeed in Metsys's example in Antwerp - the figure of Christ was frequently paired with a Virgin in Prayer.
