This characteristic Italianate landscape by Wijck can be compared – in style, subject, technique and in its signature – to such examples as those in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-A-1888-1543, RP-T-1900-A-4437; see P. Schatborn, with J. Verberne, Drawn to Warmth. 17th-Century Dutch Artists in Italy, exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, 2001, p. 120, figs. H, I). The present sheet may depict a corner in Rome, where Wijck probably stayed somewhere between 1644 and 1652.
