GUSTAVE MOREAU, STUDIES OF A MAN WEARING A HELMET, GRAPHITE

This is a preliminary study for a painting refused by the Salon of 1852, Darius fleeing after the battle of Arbelles, exhausted from his flight, he drinks from muddy water, in the Musée Gustave Moreau, Paris (inv. 223; see P.-L. Mathieu, Gustave Moreau, Paris, 1998, no. 12, ill.). The painting was exhibited at the Salon the following year in 1853 (no. 847). The present drawing is a study for the figure of the soldier standing behind the Persian monarch.

Étude préparatoire au tableau refusé au Salon de 1852: Darius fuyant après la bataille d’Arbelles, épuisé de sa fuite, il boit dans une eau fangeuse au Musée Gustave Moreau, Paris (fig; 1 ; inv. 223 ; voir P.-L. Mathieu, Gustave Moreau, Paris, 1998, p. 273, n° 12). Le tableau sera exposé au Salon l’année suivante en 1853 (n° 847). Le présent dessin étudie la figure du soldat situé debout derrière le monarque perse.
