Lot Essay

Jean Baptiste Claude Sené, maître in 1769.

A former Argentine diplomat, Richard Peñard y Fernandez built up a renowned Parisian collection of French 18th century decorative arts. His apartment on rue Cognacq-Jay was sumptuous and there are many pieces with this illustrious provenance in French institutions including Thomire's pair of firedogs for Salon de la Paix in Versailles (inv. V 3329.1), and the the famous pair of blue vernis Martin corner cabinets delivered by Thomas-Joachim Hébert in 1743 for the 'blue room' in Château de Choisy, now in the Louvre (inv. OA9533). The vast majority of his collection was subsequently dispersed at his famous 1960 sale at the Palais Galliera.
