Lot Essay

The eighteenth station of the Tokaido road, Ejiri, was one of the busiest stations in Suruga Province after Fuchu (府中). Here, travelers on the narrow path are suddenly buffeted by a gust of wind. Tissues, leaves, and a straw hat are carried away. Hokusai masterfully evokes wind. Mount Fuji in the background further emphasizes the sense of powerlessness experienced by humans in the face of nature.
