Lot Essay

Woven in the mountainous region surrounding Lake Urmia in northern Azerbaijan, this Kurdish runner has distinctive ornamentation which take their cue from 18th century Caucasian carpets, such as the late 17th/early 18th century 'Blossom' carpet in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (acc.no.53.156). Characteristics of these Kurdish weavings are their saturated colour palettes of brilliant colours woven with a high-quality wool (James D. Burns, Antique Rugs of Kurdistan. A Historical Legacy of Woven Art, London, 2002, p.111).

Comparable examples to our lot include one sold from the Jim Dixon collection, Skinner Marlborough, Massachusetts, 20 October 2022, lot 7, (reduced in length), as well as a slightly longer runner with Siawosch Azadi, Hamburg, sold Dorotheum, Vienna, 28 February 2018, lot 49.
