L'Héritage de Rantanplan a été prépublié dans Pilote en 1973 (du n°717 du 2 août 1973 au n°736 du 13 décembre 1973). Parution en album (n°42) en 1973.
Scénario de René Goscinny (1926 – 1977).
Le postulat de cet album est totalement absurde : le pénitencier reçoit la visite du notaire d’un ancien détenu. Ce dernier, immensément riche, a légué toute sa fortune à nul autre que Rantanplan, « le chien le plus bête de l’Ouest », et, désormais, le plus fortuné. À une époque où certains couturiers font de leur animal de compagnie leur légataire, on peut se demander si, comme le dit l’expression consacrée, la réalité ne rattrape pas la fiction.
L’élément véritablement déclencheur de l’intrigue est la condition ajoutée par le défunt, comme un savoureux astérisque : s’il devait arriver quelque chose à Rantanplan, le nouvel héritier ne serait autre que Joe Dalton ! Lucky Luke doit donc servir de protecteur à Rantanplan, et en particulier le conduire jusqu’à Virginia City, dans le Nevada, une ville dont la prospérité et le fonctionnement reposent sur la mine d’argent voisine, dont notre canidé vient d’hériter.
Que se passerait-il si un chien, et en particulier un chien aussi bête que Rantanplan, héritait d’une fortune colossale ? Si le lecteur pouvait craindre que l’argent change l’homme, une chose est sûre, c’est que Rantanplan, lui, ne change pas. Sa bêtise, toujours à contretemps quelle que soit la situation, ignore les fluctuations propres aux marchés boursiers. Le ressort comique de cette planche est lié à l’attitude des personnages qui, s’ils dépendent tous du “nouveau patron”, semblent être conscients du ridicule de la situation.
Cette planche témoigne aussi de la jalousie qui règne entre Jolly Jumper, qui a longtemps été le seul animal nommé récurrent de la série, et Rantanplan, désormais un membre presqu’inamovible du casting.
The premise of this album is utterly absurd. The penitentiary receives a visit from the solicitor of an ex-convict. The latter, immensely rich, has left his entire fortune to none other than Rantanplan, "the dumbest dog in the West", and, now, the wealthiest. At a time when certain fashion designers are making their pets their heirs, we may well surmise that, as the saying goes, truth really is stranger than fiction...
The real trigger for the plot is the condition added by the deceased, like a mischievous little asterisk: if anything were to happen to Rantanplan, the new heir would be none other than… Joe Dalton! Lucky Luke must therefore act as Rantanplan's protector, and in particular get him to Virginia City, in Nevada, a town whose prosperity and smooth running depend on the nearby silver mine that our canine friend has just inherited.
What would happen if a dog, especially one as stupid as Rantanplan, inherited a huge fortune? While readers may fear that money changes people, one thing is certain: Rantanplan never changes. He's always up to no good, whatever the situation, and he's oblivious to the ups and downs of the stock market. The comic element of this page lies in the attitude of the characters, who, while all answerable to the "new boss", seem to be aware of the ridiculousness of the situation.
This page also reveals the jealousy that exists between Jolly Jumper, who for a long time has been the only recurring named animal in the series, and Rantanplan, now an almost indestructible member of the cast.
