Elias Adam (1669-1745), whose mark is reproduced in H. Seling, Die Augsburger Gold- und Silverschmiede 1529-1868, Munich, 2007, no. 1964, pp. 459-462, became a master in 1703. He was a prolific goldsmith who specialized in works mounted with enamels, such as seen in the present lot. The source for the enameled scene, depicting a man getting pickpocketed in a brothel surrounded by other cavorting figures, also appears on one of a pair of beakers in the collection of the Städtische Kunstsammlungen, Augsburg where the painted enamel has been attributed to Johann Jakob Priester (1660-1726), one of the most well known Augsburg enamellers.
