Lot Essay

According to Ila Weiss, "This painting is among a group of early studies by Gifford that examine the forms and textures of water, rocks, and trees, landscape elements then new to his work that would evolve and figure prominently throughout his career...Its subject, a bit of white water, probably at a bend in Catskill Creek, below Haines Falls, is closely related to...Fishing in a Mountain Stream, Princeton University Art Museum." (unpublished letter, 2024)
