Lot Essay

Born in Bremen, Germany, Hermann Herzog trained at the Dusseldorf Academy before settling in Philadelphia in the 1870s. After exploring the American Northeast, Herzog traveled West, including to California and Yosemite circa 1873-74. The experience inspired the artist for several years following, with his painting of Sentinel Rock, Yosemite earning a medal at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876.
