A PLASTER RELIEF OF ‘LES CHÂTIMENTS’ (THE PUNISHMENTS), JULES DALOU

In this project for the tomb in the Panthéon, entitled Monument to Victor Hugo, Dalou encapsulates the profound admiration he held for the ‘Man of the Century.’ Through a rich symbolic vocabulary, the sculptor pays tribute to Hugo's entire universe, his poems, and novels, including Notre-Dame de Paris, La Légende des siècles, and Les Quatre vents de l'esprit. At the centre of this triumphal arch stands a scene titled The Punishments, referencing Hugo's collection of satirical poems published in 1853.
Dalou created several independent reliefs on this subject in bronze, plaster, and ceramic, while the painter Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) produced an etching of the subject, intended to illustrate an edition of the eponymous collection, thereby contributing to its success and dissemination.

Dans son projet de tombeau pour le Panthéon appelé Monument à Victor Hugo, Dalou transcrit toute l’admiration qu’il porte à l’« Homme du siècle ». Grâce à un foisonnant vocabulaire symbolique, le sculpteur rend hommage à l’ensemble de son univers, à ses poèmes et romans parmi lesquels Notre-Dame de Paris, La légende des siècles et Les Quatre vents de l’esprit. Au centre de cet arc de triomphe figure une scène intitulée Les Châtiments, en référence au recueil de poèmes satiriques d’Hugo publié en 1853.
Dalou produit quelques reliefs indépendants de ce sujet en bronze, plâtre et céramique, tandis que le peintre Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) en réalisait une eau-forte, la destinant à illustrer une édition du recueil éponyme et participant à son succès ainsi qu'à sa diffusion.
