Loftus Otway Bland served under Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen, and also saw service in the West Indies where he married Sarah, widow of J. Ashbourner and daughter of Samuel Foote of Demerara. The capture of the 26-gun 'Liguria' after a four hour engagement in which the 14-gun 'Espoir' defended her convoy, earned him a promotion to Captain on 25th September 1798. Another depiction of the capture by Whitcombe was engraved by Thomas Sutherland for James Jenkins's 1817 publication The Naval Achievements of Great Britain, from the Year 1793 to 1817. Whitcombe was an accomplished and prolific maritime artist about whose life little is known, although he was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy.
