Details
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
Portrait photograph signed ('A. Einstein') and inscribed to 'Herrn Dr Martin Meyer', n.p., 1950
226 x 164mm, signed on the blank lower margin (the inscription and signature slightly faded).
A soulful portait of the 71-year old Einstein – a highly expressive photograph apparently capturing the great scientist in a moment of singular world-weariness. The recipient may be Dr Martin Meyer (1898⁄99-1956), chairman of the Chemistry Department at Brooklyn College and a translator of some of Einstein's works. The rumpled pullover and lack of a tie are characteristic of Einstein's remarkable informality of dress in later life. The photographer is unidentified, but may be Hermann Landshoff (1905-1986): Einstein's unusually short and centrally-parted hair, as well as his pullover and pale shirt, closely match his appearance during a session with Landshoff at his Princeton home in c. 1950. For another signed print of this photograph, see Christie's, 11 July 2018, lot 90 (£18,750).
