Salonique, la Macédoine, l'Athos. Préface de Gustave Schlumberger. Paris: the authors, 1922.
First edition, copy number 37 for Monsieur Bonabeau, from a total edition of 77. The 45 woodcuts printed in colours by François-Louis Schmied are after paintings executed in Macedonia by Jean Goulden who also financed the printing. Goulden was a major in the Eastern Army Corps, or Dardanelles Army, formed during the Gallipoli Campaign. Wounded in action, Goulden was sent to convalesce in Thessaloniki. Struck by the beauty of the landscapes and colours, he was inspired to return to painting. He travelled through Macedonia and Chalkidiki, visited Mount Athos and discovered Byzantine enamels which would become his vocation as an artist. In 1925 Goulden married Dolly Schmied, daughter of his illustrator friend. Carteret comments that Goulden was able to render luminous skies, religious monuments, abbeys, and dream landscapes: ‘Superbe realisation très cotée’ (Carteret, IV-192).

Folio (430 x 310mm). One of 77 copies on Japan, preface by Gustave Schlumberger (1844-1929), historiated initial and 45 colour-printed wood-engraved plates by Schmied after paintings by Jean Goulden, each numbered 37⁄70 and signed in pencil by Schmied and Goulden. Unsewn in original wrappers, upper cover with illuminated title in relief stencilled polychrome decoration, contained within decorative paper-covered portfolio and slipcase (original wrappers with light finger-soiling, portfolio worn with joints split and associated wear to head of spine near labels, slipcase in good condition with only insignificant rubbing at extremities). Provenance: [sold Sotheby’s, 27 June 1997, lot 14].
