The vendor, a fellow musician, knew Noel Redding and as a result of this aquaintance was able to go backstage to meet The Experience after their performance at the Dorothy Ballroom, Cambridge. When he asked Hendrix to sign something for him ... he opened his guitar case and took out a sheet of paper, tore off the bottom and wrote the message on it and signed it... as did Redding, Mitchell and Chandler, it was not until later when the vendor looked at the reverse of the paper that he realized it had these working lyrics on it.

Foxy Lady appeared on the first Jimi Hendrix Experience album Are You Experienced and was recorded at CBS on December 13th 1966. This song is said to have been inspired by Heather Taylor (who later married Roger Daltrey). Hendrix said of his song writing ..I write a lot of words all over the place, on matchboxes, or on napkins, sitting around doing nothing, and then the music makes me think of a few words I might have written. So I go back to those few words, if I can find them. I'm not ashamed to say I can't write happy songs. 'Foxy Lady' is about the only happy song I've written...
