Lot Essay

As demonstrated by the present work, during van den Hecke's initial stay in Antwerp from 1636-1644 he appears to have been much influenced by the work of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, who had settled in the city by 1636.

We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for proposing the attribution to Jan van den Hecke I on the basis of photographs, and for dating it to around the mid-1640s.
