Lot Essay

Born in Binghamton, New York, Robert M. Pratt studied under Samuel F.B. Morse and Charles C. Ingham and was a close friend of Sanford Robinson Gifford. He established himself in New York City by 1845, exhibiting portraits annually at the National Academy of Design. After a trip to Paris in 1859, Pratt expanded beyond portraiture to also depict still lifes and genre scenes.
