Lancée en 1965, la Fiat 500 F constituait l’évolution la plus avancée de la populaire citadine italienne. Plus pratique et encore mieux conçue, elle préservait le charme essentiel qui avait fait de la 500 un symbole de la Dolce Vita. Son moteur bicylindre de 499 cm³ en position arrière renfermait la même fougue qui avait propulsé des générations d’Italiens pendant le boom de l’après-guerre. Cette version disposait de portières désormais montées sur des charnières avant et offrait une meilleure visibilité ainsi qu’un habitacle plus confortable.
Avec ses côtés dépourvus de portières, la Spiaggina « Decathlon » de Sibona-Basano, une création rare et imaginative du célèbre carrossier turinois fondé par Giovanni et Pietro Sibona ainsi que Walter Basano, transfuges de chez Ghia, constitue l’une des interprétations les plus intéressantes de la Fiat 500. Construite en très petite série, la Decathlon a troqué la carrosserie en acier de la 500 pour une structure légère en fibre de verre. Elle est également équipée de sièges en osier tressés à la main, d’un auvent amovible et d’aménagements minimalistes conçus pour une conduite estivale en toute quiétude.
Cet exemplaire particulier aurait été utilisé comme voiture de location sur l’île de Ponza, comme en témoignent les décalcomanies d’époque et les registres d’immatriculation italiens indiquant qu’elle a servi de véhicule « noleggio » (à louer) en 1977. Récemment restaurée, elle offre désormais une présentation magnifique et transforme l’humble Fiat 500 en un ravissant véhicule pour des promenades en bord de mer qui rappelleront la vie insouciante sur la Riviera italienne dans les années 1960.

Introduced in 1965, the Fiat 500 F represented the most refined evolution of Italy’s beloved city car, offering greater practicality and improved engineering while preserving the essential charm that made the 500 a symbol of la dolce vita. Beneath its rear-mounted 499 cc twin-cylinder engine lay the same spirited heart that powered generations of Italians through the postwar boom, now paired with front-hinged doors, improved visibility, and a more comfortable cabin.
Among the most captivating interpretations of the Fiat 500 was the open-sided Sibona-Basano “Decathlon” Spiaggina, a rare and imaginative creation by the renowned Torino coachbuilder founded by former Ghia craftsmen Giovanni and Pietro Sibona and Walter Basano. Built in extremely limited numbers, the Decathlon replaced the 500’s steel body with lightweight fiberglass coachwork, complemented by hand-woven wicker seats, a detachable canopy, and minimalist fittings designed for effortless summer motoring.
This particular example is believed to have served as a rental car on the island of Ponza, as evidenced by period decals and Italian registration records noting its use as a “noleggio” (for hire) vehicle in 1977. In recently restored condition, it now presents beautifully and transforms the humble Fiat 500 into a delightful seaside runabout, evoking the carefree Riviera lifestyle of the 1960s.
