Lot Essay

Richard Brakenburgh was a pupil of Hendrik Mommers and painted comical genre scenes of merry-makers and drinking parties in the style of Adriaen van Ostade and Jan Steen. He explored the theme of family life in several compositions, including The Celebration of a Birth (Dulwich Picture Gallery, Dulwich, inv. no. DPG621) and A Family Portrait (The Art Museum Riga Bourse, Riga), as in the present canvas.
