Lot Essay

The drawing is related to a similar composition at the Morgan Library and Museum (inv. 1961.12:75). The Morgan sheet, which is larger and executed in black chalk, was part of the collection of drawings for book illustrations known as the Kress Album. A print of this subject is not known.

Several red chalk studies of religious subjects comparable to this drawing are in one of Piazzetta’s albums in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin (on these albums see C. Gauna, Disegno e cultura visiva a metà Settecento. Documentare, narrare, mettere in scena, Rome, 2025).
