Miss Carter (who wore Pink)
signed ‘HELEN BRADLEY’ and with a fly (lower right), inscribed ‘Miss Carter (who wore Pink) picked up/her skirt and started to walk very/fast along Spring Lane towards the/cemetery. “Dear me”, said Aunt Mary/she is in a huff. She had seen Mr/Taylor (the Bank Manager) walking/with Emily Maitland, and he called to/her to turn back as he was sure it/was going to rain. “Rain indeed”, she/said. “Every time I see that man it's/always going to rain”. “Well”, said/mother, “I don't think it's her fear of getting/rained on that's upset her, it's seeing him/with poor Emily. Anyway we’d better all/go after her” and the year was 1906.’ (on the artist's label attached to the reverse)
