This sheet is taken from a sketchbook containing around fifty-five sketches on sheets with lines on the right-hand side. The collection, mainly consisting of nude male figures, was dismantled in the early 1920s. Most of the drawings in this album are now in the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum (J. Bean, W. Griswold, 18th Century Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1990, no. 47), Princeton (F. Gibbons, Catalogue of Italian Drawings in the Art Museum, Princeton University, Princeton, 1977, nos. 211-4, attributed to Fontebasso) and in the Lehman collection (J. Byam Shaw, G. Knox, op. cit., no. 60, attributed to Novelli). Another was sold at Christie’s London on July 4, 2000, lot 34, also enhanced with this highly identifiable pink wash, which the artist uses in the background to anchor the composition and convey light.
James Byam Shaw attributed the drawings to Fontebasso in 1954, and he maintained this attribution, rightly so, despite attempts to attribute the drawings to the young Pietro Antonio Novelli.

Lot Essay

La présente feuille est extraite d'un carnet d’environ cinquante-cinq croquis sur feuilles à lignes réglées sur le côté droit. L’ensemble, principalement des figures d’hommes nus, a été démembré au début des années 1920. La plupart des dessins de cet album sont aujourd’hui au British Museum, au Metropolitan Museum (J. Bean, W. Griswold, 18th Century Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1990, n° 47), à Princeton (F. Gibbons, Catalogue of Italian Drawings in the Art Museum, Princeton University, Princeton, 1977, n^os 211-4, attribué à Fontebasso) et dans la collection Lehman (J. Byam Shaw, G. Knox, op. cit., n° 60, attribué à Novelli). Un autre est passé en vente chez Christie’s Londres, 4 juillet 2000, lot 34, également rehaussé de ce lavis rose très identifiable, que l’artiste utilise à l’arrière-plan pour assoir la composition et transcrire la lumière.
James Byam Shaw a attribué les dessins à Fontebasso en 1954, et il a maintenu cette attribution, à juste titre, malgré les tentatives visant à attribuer les dessins au jeune Pietro Antonio Novelli.
