CIRCLE OF HANS BOCKSBERGER THE YOUNGER, BATTLEFIELDS AFTER AN ATTACK, PEN AND BLACK INK, BLUE WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE ON BLUE PAPER

This drawing belongs to the circle of Hans Bocksberger the Younger, whose stylistic characteristics and taste for antiquity it echoes. The artist drew mainly on the engravings of Jost Amman (1539-1591) for The Roman History of Titus, printed by Sigmund Feyerabend (1528-1590) in Frankfurt in 1568, for which Bocksberger had produced the preparatory drawings (S. Kaeppele, Die Malerfamilie Bocksberger aus Salzburg, Salzburg, 2003, pp. 179-192). The group of horsemen on the right is copied from the scene depicting Aulus Cornelius Cossus bringing back the spoils of Veii, also used to illustrate the Triumph over Antiochus III (plates XCV and CI of the work, respectively). In an Mannerist vein, the artist produced a particularly polished work, whose remarkable level of completion is evident in the unusual choice of blue paper, the detailed treatment of the landscapes and figures, and the subtle gray washes and white highlights.

Ce dessin s’inscrit dans l’entourage de Hans Bocksberger le Jeune dont il reprend certaines caractéristiques stylistiques ainsi que le goût pour l’antique. L’artiste s’est ici principalement appuyé sur les gravures de Jost Amman (1539-1591) pour L’Histoire romaine de Tite Livre imprimée chez Sigmund Feyerabend (1528-1590) à Francfort en 1568, et dont Bocksberger avait réalisé les dessins préparatoires (S. Kaeppele, Die Malerfamilie Bocksberger aus Salzburg, Salzbourg, 2003, p.179-192). Le groupe de cavaliers sur la droite est copié d’après la scène figurant Aulus Cornelius Cossus rapportant le butin de Veiès aussi utilisé pour illustrer le Triomphe sur Antiochus III (respectivement les planches XCV et CI de l’ouvrage). Dans une veine maniériste, l’artiste a produit une oeuvre particulièrement finie: choix singulier du papier bleu, traitement détaillé du paysages et des figures, et subtils lavis gris et rehauts blanc
