JEAN LEMAIRE-POUSSIN, MULE DRIVER RESTING IN CAMPO VACCINO (RECTO); STUDY OF A CORNER OF A BURIED ANCIENT TEMPLE CORNICE, EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR VIEW (VERSO), TRACES OF BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, INSCRIVED (VERSO)
A pupil of Claude Vignon, Lemaire travelled to Rome, where his presence is recorded as early as 1613. It was there that he formed a close association with Nicolas Poussin upon the latter’s arrival in 1624. Returning to Paris in 1639, he was joined by Poussin the following year and appointed his principal assistant for the decoration of the Grande Galerie of the Louvre. Lemaire left once again for Italy in 1642 before returning to France, where he settled permanently.
Stylistically comparable is a Study of a Ruined Temple, executed in the same technique and formerly in the collection of Jean‑Denis Lempereur (1701–1779), which was sold at Christie’s, New York, 30 January 1997, lot 121.
