Jules Bastien-Lepage here portrays Francesco Paolo Tosti, the celebrated Italian composer of the Belle Époque, surrounded by musical notation scattered across the fragments of sheet music that animate the background of the composition. In addition to his prolific musical output, Tosti served as singing master to Queen Margherita of Savoy, and from 1875 onwards to the British royal family.
