Lot Essay
A concept entirely of its own, Krayon’s Anywhere embodies a rare synthesis of meaning, aesthetics, and technical ingenuity. The design and function of this watch are closely related, making it a timepiece that perfectly blends style, readability, and mechanical complexity.
The present example forms part of a limited edition of 15 pieces created in collaboration with Perpétuel Gallery in 2021. Conceived through a close creative exchange, this edition features a distinctive colour palette inspired by desert landscapes, alongside Eastern Arabic numerals that reflect the gallery’s geographical context.
At the heart of the watch lies Krayon’s in-house base calibre, the result of nearly two years of development by Rémi Maillat. The movement was completely designed from scratch and includes a new gear train, lever escapement, and balance. Its design is especially remarkable as it allows complicated astronomical indications to be built right into the movement plane instead of having to add a modular system, thereby preserving slim proportions.
The defining feature of the Anywhere is its ability to display the precise times of sunrise and sunset for a chosen location. This sophisticated calculation takes into account multiple variables, including latitude, longitude, time zone, date, and the equation of time. The system is protected by three patents, underscoring its technical originality.
Adjustment of the display is carried out by a watchmaker via a micrometric screw linked to cams controlling the mechanism’s eccentricity, while additional correction screws on either side allow for fine calibration of sunrise and sunset indications. Comprising 432 components, the movement exemplifies both mechanical complexity and refined finishing.
The dial of this Perpétuel edition is particularly evocative, featuring light orange and black accents on the outer chapter ring to distinguish day and night. The celestial discs are adorned with hand-painted stars, while a hand-engraved sun in rose gold tracks the progression of daylight. The hours are indicated on a peripheral ring in Eastern Arabic numerals, while the centre of the dial is rendered in deep black with a subtle spherical motif characteristic of the Anywhere collection. A silvered subdial, echoing the case tone, displays the date and month in Eastern Arabic script.
Krayon
Founded in 2013 by Rémi Maillat, Krayon is distinguished by its unique approach to watchmaking, where complex mathematical concepts are translated into intuitive and poetic mechanical displays. Maillat, both watchmaker and design engineer, has developed a singular expertise in integrating astronomical calculations into wearable timepieces.
In 2017, he introduced Everywhere, the brand’s first creation, followed in 2018 by the bespoke Everywhere Horizon, which was awarded the Innovation Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. In 2020, the Anywhere further expanded this vision, offering a personalised interpretation of solar time. Through Krayon, Maillat continues to redefine the boundaries of contemporary watchmaking, combining scientific precision with artistic expression and philosophical depth.
