Lot Essay

First introduced in 1968, the Ellipse, along with the Calatrava, is one of Patek Philippe's longest-running model lines, representing more than 60 years of heritage and production. The 'Golden Ratio', an ancient Greek concept of aesthetic harmony that specifies the ideal proportion of height, width, and volume, serves as the foundation for its design. The Ellipse, which introduced a shape that was neither round, rectangular, nor oval but rather a representation of mathematical elegance in watchmaking, was regarded as a daring break from tradition when it first appeared.

The extremely rare lapis lazuli dial of the present timepiece further sets it apart. Lapis lazuli is valued for its deep blue, night sky-like appearance, which is frequently broken up by subtle natural inclusions. It is thought to be one of the oldest minerals that humans have discovered and utilized. Being one of only a few Ellipse models with a lapis lazuli dial elevates this watch even further, making it a true symbol of 1970s design. Hardstone-dialed Patek Philippe timepieces are now highly sought-after by collectors as unique vintage pieces made in extremely small quantities.
