Lot Essay

The Royal Oak 5402BA, a classic model from the Audemars Piguet Manufacture, is one of the most sought-after high-end sports watches ever made. The renowned Gérald Genta created the Royal Oak, which became the brand's enduring emblem after captivating a discriminating and knowledgeable audience. It is now considered the masterpiece of Genta's career.

The original steel Royal Oak reference 5402 was more expensive than any of Audemars Piguet's gold timepieces at the time. The reference 5402BA in yellow gold, which the manufacturer unveiled in 1977, offered a daring reimagining of the high-end sports watch, preserving the durability and unique style of the Royal Oak while enhancing it with the use of a precious metal. The yellow gold reference 5402BA, which was made in just 736 units between 1977 and 1990, is still one of the most sought-after versions of the original Royal Oak 'Jumbo'.
