The composition loosely follows the central figures in Jan Sanders van Hemessen's signed Mocking of Christ in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, with which the present panel shares the muscular figure of Christ pressed close to the picture plane, the high placement of his bound hands clutching the instruments of the Passion, the broad woven crown of thorns, and the turbaned tormentor at his shoulder. It is one of at least three closely related variants, others including the panel sold at Sotheby's, London, 27 October 2015, lot 494, and a further version recorded in the Frick Photoarchive (no. 4107100346821).

A dendrochronological report by Ian Tyers dates the panel to after circa 1582 and probably before circa 1612 (November 2025, available upon request), consistent with execution by a follower working in the generation after Hemessen.
