The principal decoration depicts Magu xianshou (“Magu presenting longevity”), one of the most celebrated auspicious themes of Kangxi period porcelain. Magu, the Daoist immortal associated with longevity and immortality, is shown carrying a flower basket containing auspicious offerings, accompanied by a deer symbolising both longevity and official success. Together, these motifs convey wishes for prosperity, rank and long life.
The scene is reserved within a large rectangular panel against a rich black ground decorated with floral and chilong motifs, a characteristic compositional device of Kangxi wucai porcelains. Particularly notable is the use of the highly prized black ground wucai technique, in which a lustrous black enamel ground is contrasted with brilliant overglaze enamels in green, yellow, aubergine and blue.
