Lot Essay

The tragic news was telegraphed by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton who was present at the Petersen Boarding House where the president was taken following the shooting at Ford's Theatre. Stanton addressed his message to John A. Dix in New York. Dix immediately contacted the press, who reproduced the message throughout the city. This unusually large edition was likely intended to be pasted on a wall, but in this case it was saved from the typical fate of such ephemeral objects.

Extremely rare. Apart from the present example, the only other extant copy is part of the collections of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
