Domenico (known as Mino) Delle Site was one of the youngest members of the second wave of Italian Futurism and an important exponent of the associated Aeropittura movement.
In 1930, at the age of sixteen, Delle Site moved to Rome to complete his artistic education at an art college and at the Accademia di Belle Arti. Sintesi di virata, Aeropittura and Sogno dell’aviere were produced shortly after his move to Rome and his encounters with Futurist painter Enrico Prampolini and the photographer and art dealer Anton Giulio Bragaglia. These sheets reflect the artist’s early and direct engagement with the dynamic language of aerial vision that defined the movement.
Likely originating from the same notebook, the present works relate to a broader series and illustrate Delle Site’s early exploration of speed, motion and atmospheric synthesis within a concise and experimental format. Sintesi di virata, executed in 1931, is notable as the first work shown by the artist to Prampolini during the exhibition Prima Mostra di Aeropittura – Omaggio futurista ai trasvolatori in Rome. At this time, Delle Site was just seventeen and still at art school, which may explain why he decided to erase his name and the date referring to his school class at the bottom of the sheet.
The composition of Sintesi di virata also served as the basis for a larger tempera painting of the same year, now in the Pinacoteca Provinciale, Bari, underscoring the importance of these intimate works within the development of the artist’s early Futurist vocabulary.
