Details
BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638) and Joan BLAEU (1596-1673)
Toonneel des Aerdriicx, ofte nieuwe atlas, dat is beschryving van alle landen. Amsterdam: Johannes Blaeu, 1647-[1642]-1642-[1647].
A finely hand-coloured set of the first four volumes of the Dutch edition of Willem Blaeu's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in German in two volumes (1634) followed by a set in Dutch a year later. Volumes 5 and 6 were not printed until 1654 and 1655.
Van der Krogt notes ‘The Dutch edition of the Blaeu’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is the most complicated of the editions of this atlas. The text was reset entirely at least four times, and the general title page shows many different dates from 1642 to 1661. However the resetting of the text and the change of the date on the title page were not at the same time […] Since the number of sheets of printed maps in stock varied, sheets from older editions were sometimes included in newer editions, making innumerable variants’ (p. 169).
The colouring of this copy is particularly fine and the heightening in gold on the titles and the detailed work on the cartouches throughout suggest it was an important commission. Van der Krogt 2:222.1JE-2E-3E and 2:321Ia.
4 volumes, folio (503 x 325mm). Dutch text. Half-title in volume 1, 6 hand-coloured engraved allegorical titles, 334 engraved maps, plans and plates, most double-page, some folding, full-page or within text, all mounted on guards and finely coloured by a contemporary hand, the titles heightened with gold, letterpress index leaf at end of each volume. Contemporary Dutch vellum gilt with central gilt stamp of Atlas holding a celestial globe surrounded by ornate tooling, flat spines gilt (bindings slightly rubbed and marked, new endpapers).
Volume 1: World, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Germany and Holland, 2 parts in one volume, half-title, 2 engraved titles (part 1 dated 1647, part 2 dated 1642) coloured by hand and heightened with gold, the second with letterpress overslip, and 120 engraved maps, all coloured by hand, most double-page, some folding, one half-page, mounted on guards (title and half-title slightly creased and frayed at edges, occasional creases to maps, large folding map of Lithuania with clean tear along fold in centre, some dampstaining to lower margin occasionally into text and lower portion of some maps, some maps lightly browned).
Volume 2: France, Spain, Africa, Asia and the Americas 2 parts in one volume, 2 engraved titles (part 1 undated, part 2 dated 1642), coloured by hand and heightened with gold, both with letterpress overslips, and 92 engraved maps, all coloured by hand, most double page, one folding, mounted on guards (maps of Africa bound between Asia and America), most-double page, one folding (occasional dust- and other stains, final bifolium of text becoming detached from guard, occasional slight browning, minor creases or tears).
Volume 3: Italy and Greece, engraved title (dated 1642), coloured by hand and heightened with gold, with printed overslip, 62 engraved maps, all coloured by hand, most double-page, one full-page and 3 half-page, letterpress index leaf at end (title slightly creased and stained, and detached from guard, some marginal dampstaining, occasional short tears).
Volume 4: England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, engraved title (dated 1646, preface dated 12 November 1647) coloured by hand and heightened with gold, with printed overslip, 60 engraved maps, all coloured by hand, 57 double-page, one single-page and 3 half-page hand-coloured engravings in the text of Stonehenge, the Rollright Stones near Eynsham, and subterranean holes near Tilbury, letterpress index leaf at end (title slightly creased, a little light marginal dampstaining, occasional short tears and stains).
