DUPPA, Baldwin Francis (1828-1873)
Three albums containing over 300 drawings and watercolours of Capri, Ischia, Sicily and Tunisia. 1868-1872.
A large and well-presented collection of original drawings and watercolours mounted in three folio albums. Duppa ‘was a painter of no inconsiderable ability; and from his frequent wanderings in search of health […] he always brought home his portfolio well filled with beautiful and interesting sketches, in which he sometimes embodied the effects of ancient and modern volcanic and glacial action with great vividness and truth.” (obituary in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, vol. XXI, 1873, pp. vi-ix).

Baldwin Francis Duppa (1828–1872) was an organic chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society (1867) recognised for pioneering research in synthesising organic acids and ethers. He bore the same name as his father, the educationist Baldwin Francis Duppa (1801–1840), and was educated at Hofwyl, near Berne, Cambridge, and the Royal College of Chemistry (1855). Duppa partnered with prominent chemists William Henry Perkin and Edward Frankland to advance structural chemistry; he was also correspondent with Lady Byron and Lord Lovelace. Duppa spent significant time during the final years of his life in Italy, mostly in Capri, Ischia and Sicily, while battling tuberculosis. Duppa published 14 collaborative scientific papers published in the Philosophical Transactions, the Proceedings of the Royal Society, and the Chemical Society’s Journal, before his illness curtailed his career.

The first album contains 69 drawings and watercolours, showing approximately 44 views of Capri (including a number of 2-sheet panoramas), 8 of Pompeii, and 4 of Vesuvius, together with a traced pencil map of Capri, with dates from August to September 1868.

This album also contains a large watercolour showing the artist Walter Maclaren (1837-1929) at work in his studio in Capri painting the portrait of a young lady; there is an additional pen and ink sketch, dated 13 September 1868 of Maclaren’s studio showing paintings on easels and on the wall, palettes, and the artist’s bed. ‘Walter Maclaren was a versatile artist who painted in many styles. It seems probable that he possessed independent means and did not need to sell or publicize his work. He lived for many years in Capri, particularly in the 1870s, where he painted many scenes of life in Capri and its landscape’ (The Victorian Web).

The second album contains a pen and ink map of Ischia, along with approximately 40 views of Ischia, 21 of Pompeii, 6 of Capri, 4 of Amalfi, 2 of Naples and one of Vesuvius.

The third album contains 149 drawings and watercolours, showing one of Ajaccio, 17 views in and around Tunis (mostly Cape Carthage and Goletta), and around 95 of Sicily (including Trapani and Taormina), one of Lipari, one of Vulcano, 5 of Ravenna, 4 of Venice, one of Verona, 2 of Lake Como and 10 views on the Rhine. The album also contains a mounted albumen print photograph of people in the garden of house with two inscriptions signed by Agostino Pepoli (1848-1910) presenting this photograph to Duppa in memory a happy day spent together in Trapani on 21 April 1872.
