Lot Essay

It is very rare to find a Chenghua ‘dragon’ dish like the current example. Compare to a Chenghua doucai dish of this design, housed in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Ch’eng-Hua Porcelain Ware, Taipei, 2003, no. 128; and another doucai dish decorated with mythical beasts to the exterior in Mrs. Walter Sedgwick’s collection, illustrated in Ming Pottery and Porcelain, London, 1953, no. 66B.
