The Two Ways of Life (1857, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art).

British artist of Swedish origin, Oscar Gustave Rejlander (1813-1875) is one of the major figures of Victorian photography. A pioneer of photomontage, he was among the first photographers to combine several negatives or prints within a single image, as exemplified by his most celebrated work, The Two Ways of Life (1857, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art). Regarded as a precursor of British Pictorialism, Rejlander sought to elevate photography to the status of the fine arts. His training and early career as a portrait painter are clearly evident in this portrait of the young Virginia Julian.

Associated with Rejlander as a model, Virginia Dalrymple also moved within Victorian artistic circles, where the singularity of her features made her particularly sought after. She notably posed for George Frederick Watts, whose works were often exhibited alongside those of Julia Margaret Cameron.

Through the care devoted to the pose, lighting, and composition, the image is distinguished by its profoundly pictorial character. It testifies to the artist’s desire to bring photography closer to the painting of his time.
