The reduction of exposure time was a constant concern from the very beginnings of photography. This pursuit of the instantaneous image, driven by both artistic and commercial ambitions, was already central to the partnership between Niépce and Daguerre in the 1830s.
The introduction, in the 1880s, of gelatin silver dry plates and more compact cameras enabled photographers to take advantage of these new possibilities and produce unprecedented images. Here, despite some motion blur, the photographer succeeds in capturing two moving subjects traveling along divergent paths: a pedestrian and a horse-drawn omnibus.
Through its ability to convey speed, this image draws the viewer into the momentum of the Belle Époque. One can almost hear the murmur of the boulevard, while the omnibus, hurtling forward, seems on the verge of carrying us away, placing the viewer in close proximity to these early forms of public transportation at the height of their development.
This photograph thus bears witness to the conquest of the instantaneous image, capturing on the spot a fleeting moment of a city in motion.
