This rare photograph of Marey shows him using the first instrument he devised, the sphygmograph, in 1860. The device was designed to record the pulse, translating the signs of blood circulation into graphic form. Through a system of levers and a stylus, the instrument converted the heartbeat into a trace inscribed on a sheet of smoke-blackened paper.
