Lot Essay

In 1975, Helmut Newton photographed the German model Vera von Lehndorff, known as Veruschka, one of the great fashion icons of the 1960s and 1970s. The photograph was taken on the terrace of the presidential suite at the Hôtel Méridien in Nice, overlooking the Promenade des Anglais and the Mediterranean Sea. True to his rejection of the studio, Newton favored real-life settings, whose atmosphere became an integral part of the staging of his subjects.

Standing in the opening of the sliding glass door to her room, Veruschka parts a curtain while the landscape is reflected in the glass. Her upright stance, together with the contrast between her structured leather jacket and the soft folds of the curtains, combines strength and sensuality. This work reflects Newton’s fascination with the intersection of glamour, power, and vulnerability, a central element of his photographic vision.
