Lot Essay

Designed by architect Konstantin Melnikov as both a theater and community gathering space for factory workers, the Rusakov Club was completed in 1927, two years before this image was made. It continues to stand today as a landmark of Russian Constructivist architecture, featuring a striking avant-garde façade and innovative interior design. Three large cantilevered galleries rise from the central stage area to create a dynamic and flexible performance space. Movable partitions within these galleries allowed the building to accommodate a variety of configurations. The club remains an important example of early Soviet architectural experimentation.
