Lot Essay

This darkly polished copper alloy figure of Maitreya represents the distinct aesthetic legacy of the Khasa Malla dynasty of Western Nepal during the thirteenth century. Seated gracefully in lalitasana on a double-lotus pedestal, the future Buddha is identified by the prominent stupa insignia on the crown of his head. The sculpture showcases a highly distinctive regional style, characterized by a robust upper torso, Gupta inspired facial features, and heavy jewelry.
